Best Bird Extensions for Chrome in 2026: An Honest Shortlist

The best bird extension for Chrome in 2026 is BirdTab: every new tab shows a real bird photograph with its call and a few facts, from any of 250+ countries. We checked every bird extension we could find on the Chrome Web Store, and only four are still listed. The others put cartoon birds on your web pages, which is a different kind of fun.

We make BirdTab. We ranked it first because it is the only one of these that shows real birds, with their real calls. Here is how we ranked the rest, with every figure linked to where we read it.

Key takeaways

  1. 1BirdTab is the only maintained extension we found on the Chrome Web Store that replaces the new tab with real bird photographs and recordings. It has a 5.0 rating from 138 ratings and the Chrome Web Store’s Featured badge.
  2. 2Pocket Bird is the best pick if you want a playful pixel-art pet bird hopping around your pages. It is open source, has 6,000 users and a 4.8 rating.
  3. 3Annoying Bird and Birdwatcher also put cartoon birds on web pages. Birdwatcher has not been updated since December 2022, so treat it as unmaintained.
  4. 4Two older bird new tab extensions, Birds New Tab Wallpapers and Nature Tab, are no longer on the Chrome Web Store. Lists that still recommend them are out of date.
  5. 5If you want to identify birds you see outdoors, you want an app, not an extension: Merlin Bird ID and eBird from the Cornell Lab are the standard. A bird extension is for the hours you spend at a screen.

What a bird extension actually is (and what it is not)

A bird extension is a small add-on for Chrome, or another Chromium browser such as Edge or Brave, that brings birds into the browser. They come in two kinds. New tab extensions replace the blank page you see when you open a tab, so the bird appears dozens of times a day without you doing anything. Page companions draw an animated bird on top of the sites you visit, where it walks, flies and lands on headings.

What a bird extension is not: a field guide or an identification tool. Extensions cannot use your camera or listen to the birds outside your window. For that, use a phone app such as Merlin Bird ID, and record your sightings in eBird. An extension is the part of birding that fits inside a working day: a few seconds with a bird you might never have heard of, between one task and the next.

The difference that matters most is real versus drawn. A real photograph and a real recording teach you something. You will start to recognise a Painted Bunting or a Eurasian Wren, and their calls. A cartoon bird is company, and good company, but it does not teach you a species.

Because a new tab extension runs every time you open a tab, upkeep and privacy matter more than with most add-ons. An extension that has not been updated in years can break with a Chrome release, and one that collects browsing data sees a lot. We weighed both.

How we ranked these bird extensions

We searched the Chrome Web Store for bird extensions, opened every listing, and kept those still available. We ranked them on four things that can be checked on the listing itself:

  1. 1. Real birds

Photographs and recordings of real species, or drawn birds.

  2. 2. Rating and number of ratings

The Chrome Web Store average, and how many people gave one.

  3. 3. Last updated

The date of the latest version. Older than two years counts against it.

  4. 4. Data collected

What the listing says it collects, and whether an account is needed.

The best bird extensions in 2026

Four bird extensions are still listed on the Chrome Web Store. One is a new tab page with real birds; the other three are animated companions for your web pages. They are ranked below, with what each is best at.

1. BirdTab, best for learning real birds while you work

  • Free
  • 5.0 rating (138)
  • Featured
  • Updated Oct 2026
  • 10 languages
  • No account

BirdTab replaces Chrome’s new tab with a photograph of a bird, its name and a recording of its call. Open the bird’s card for facts about its behaviour, habitat and conservation status, and a range map. The photographs are openly licensed images from iNaturalist, Wikimedia Commons and free photo libraries, and the recordings come from Xeno-canto and Wikimedia Commons, each credited to the person who made it.

Since version 2.1 you can choose the birds of your own country, from more than 250 countries and regions, or the World’s 500 most common birds. That makes it useful for learning the birds you will actually see. Sound has a volume control and quiet hours, so it stays silent in meetings.

Around the bird there is what you would expect from a new tab page: a search box, your shortcuts, a clock and a countdown timer. There is a short identification quiz and a history of every bird you have seen. It works offline, needs no account, shows no ads and collects no personal data.

It has 2,000 users, a 5.0 average from 138 ratings, and the Featured badge. Version 2.1.1 was released on 15 October 2026. It is available for Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Best suited for

Birders who want to keep learning species and calls during the working day, and anyone who would rather see a bird than a blank page. It suits people who want one calm thing on screen rather than a dashboard.

2. Pocket Bird, best for a playful pixel-art pet bird

  • Free
  • 4.8 rating (20)
  • Featured
  • 6,000 users
  • Open source (MPL-2.0)

Pocket Bird gives you a small pixel-art bird that hops around the web pages you visit. You can pet it, catch feathers to unlock more than 30 species, dress it in hats, and leave it sticky notes. It runs entirely in your browser and is free.

It is open source under the MPL-2.0 licence, with its code on GitHub, and it is also available for Edge and Firefox, as an Obsidian plugin and as a userscript. On the Chrome Web Store it has 6,000 users, a 4.8 average from 20 ratings and the Featured badge. The current version was released in August 2026.

It does not change your new tab, and its birds are drawn rather than photographed, so it will not teach you to recognise a species. It is the most charming of the page companions, and it pairs well with BirdTab: one on the new tab, one on your pages.

Best suited for

People who want a bit of fun on every page and like the idea of collecting birds. It is a good pick for a child’s browser, or for anyone who enjoys a desktop pet.

3. Annoying Bird, best for a joke that lands on your page

  • 4.3 rating (9)
  • 1,000 users
  • Updated Nov 2024

Annoying Bird does what its name says: a bird lands on the elements of the page you are reading. It is a small, single-purpose extension with 1,000 users and a 4.3 average from 9 ratings. Its last version, 0.2, was released in November 2024.

It is a novelty rather than something you will keep for years, and its listing says little beyond what it does. If you want a page companion with more to it, Pocket Bird is the better choice.

Best suited for

Anyone who wants a quick laugh, or a prank on a colleague’s browser. It is not for learning about birds.

4. Birdwatcher, best for little birds that eat snacks on your pages, if it still works for you

  • 4.8 rating (6)
  • 105 users
  • Updated Dec 2022

Birdwatcher fills the page with small pixel birds that fly in, land on text and eat snacks, with a pop-up inspector to look at them. Its listing says it never collects your data.

It has 105 users and a 4.8 average from 6 ratings. Its last update, version 1.1.5, was in December 2022, almost four years ago. Extensions that go unmaintained can stop working with a new Chrome release, which is why it ranks last.

Best suited for

People who liked it before and find it still runs. New users should try Pocket Bird first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best bird extension for Chrome?

BirdTab, if you want real birds: it shows a bird photograph with its call and facts on every new tab. If you want a cartoon pet bird on your web pages, Pocket Bird is the best of that kind.

Is there a Chrome extension that plays bird sounds?

Yes. BirdTab plays the recorded call or song of the bird on each new tab, with a volume control and quiet hours. You can also turn sound off and play it only when you click.

How do I get bird wallpapers on my Chrome new tab?

Install a new tab extension such as BirdTab from the Chrome Web Store. Chrome asks you to keep the new tab change once; after that every new tab shows a different bird.

Can a Chrome extension identify birds?

Not from what you see or hear outdoors: extensions cannot use your camera or microphone for that. Use Merlin Bird ID on your phone, then look the bird up on a species page.

What happened to Birds New Tab Wallpapers and Nature Tab?

Both have been removed from the Chrome Web Store; their listings now show an empty page. BirdTab is the maintained alternative for bird photos on the new tab.

How much data do bird extensions collect?

BirdTab’s listing says it collects no personal data and has no tracking, and Birdwatcher says the same. Check the privacy section of any listing before you install.

Do these extensions work in Microsoft Edge or Brave?

BirdTab is on Microsoft Edge Add-ons, and Chrome Web Store extensions also install in Brave. Pocket Bird is available for Edge and Firefox too.

Add BirdTab to Chrome

You open dozens of tabs a day. Each one can be a few seconds with a bird.

BirdTab shows a different species every time, with its call and a few facts. Choose your own country to learn the birds outside your window, or the whole world to meet birds you may never see.

It takes a minute to install and there is nothing to sign up for. You can hide everything but the photograph, or turn the sound off, whenever you like.

If that sounds like a better new tab than the one you have, add BirdTab to Chrome. Your next tab will have a bird on it.
