Overview

BirdTab is a browser extension that displays beautiful bird images and information on your new tab page. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about what data we collect and how we use it.

Data We Collect

1. Extension Settings (Stored Locally)

The following data is stored locally on your device using your browser's storage API and is never sent to any server:

• Region preference: Your selected geographic region for bird content
• Audio settings: Volume level and mute state
• Quiet hours settings: Your preferred quiet hours schedule
• Quick access settings: Whether top sites and search are enabled
• Custom shortcuts: Any shortcuts you've added
• Onboarding status: Whether you've completed the initial setup

This data stays on your device and syncs across your browsers if you're signed in.

2. Diagnostic Data (Anonymous)

To improve BirdTab and fix bugs, we collect anonymous diagnostic data using Sentry.io:

What we collect:

• Error reports (crash data, error messages, stack traces)
• Performance metrics (page load times, API response times)
• Extension version and browser information
• Your selected region (for debugging regional issues)

What we DO NOT collect:

• Personal information (name, email, address)
• Browsing history
• Websites you visit
• Content you view outside of BirdTab
• Your IP address is anonymized
• Any user-identifiable information

How diagnostic data is used:

• Identify and fix bugs
• Improve extension performance
• Understand which features have issues
• Prioritize development work

Data retention:

• Diagnostic data is retained for 30 days
• Data is processed by Sentry.io (see their privacy policy)

3. External Services

BirdTab connects to the following external services:

BirdTab does NOT collect:

• ❌ Email addresses or contact information
• ❌ Browsing history or websites visited
• ❌ Search queries (searches are handled by your browser, not us)
• ❌ Location data (we only use your manually selected region)
• ❌ Financial information
• ❌ Social media data
• ❌ Cookies or tracking identifiers
• ❌ Device identifiers

Third-Party Services

Sentry.io (Error Tracking)

We use Sentry.io to collect anonymous error reports. Sentry:

• Does not receive any personal information
• Processes data in accordance with their privacy policy
• Is GDPR compliant
• Data is stored in US data centers

Macaulay Library (Cornell Lab of Ornithology)

Bird images and audio are sourced from the Macaulay Library. We only send bird species codes to retrieve content. No personal data is shared.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

1. Opt out of diagnostics: Disable the extension to stop all data collection
2. Clear local data: Remove all stored settings by uninstalling the extension
3. Request information: Contact us to learn what data we have
4. Data portability: Your settings are stored locally and can be exported via your browser

Children's Privacy

BirdTab is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. The extension does not require any personal information to function.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes through the extension's update notes.
